What is the DVS zone?

The Direct Vision Standard is a Transport for London safety scheme for heavy goods vehicles over 12 tonnes operating in Greater London. Vehicles need a star rating and, from October 2024, either a three-star rating or the Progressive Safe System fitted to obtain an HGV Safety Permit. The zone covers most of Greater London and is enforced by camera 24 hours a day.

This checker is a planning aid built on the published zone boundary. Transport for London remains the authority for permits, ratings and current requirements.

How to check a DVS zone by postcode

Enter the delivery or collection postcode above. The tool geocodes it with Google Maps, places it on the London map, and tells you whether it sits inside the operational zone. Use the route checker to see whether a journey between two points crosses the zone at all.

Why operators keep a DVS map to hand

A quick check lets the transport office flag London jobs early, allocate a permitted vehicle, brief the driver, and keep a record that the check was made - the kind of evidence a Traffic Commissioner expects to see.

DVS zone map questions

What is the DVS zone?

The area of Greater London where HGVs over 12 tonnes must hold a Transport for London HGV Safety Permit under the Direct Vision Standard. It broadly follows the Greater London boundary and the Low Emission Zone.

How do I check whether a postcode is in the DVS zone?

Type the UK postcode in the checker above. The map shows the location and whether it falls inside the London DVS operational area.

Is the DVS zone map free?

Yes. The basic postcode and route check is free and does not need an account.

Does the route checker cover every road?

It samples the Google Maps driving route against the zone boundary. Always check the full route and any diversions; it is a planning aid, not a legal route restriction.

What does a driver need to enter the zone?

A vehicle with a valid HGV Safety Permit from TfL, the required star rating or Progressive Safe System, and a briefing on where the zone applies. Penalties are issued to the operator.
