Load security for HGV operators
Load restraint must resist the full weight of the load forwards and half its weight sideways and rearwards, using rated straps, chains and headboards in good order. Friction alone is not enough. DVSA can prohibit an insecure load on sight, so build checks and driver training into daily operation.
Insecure loads are one of the most common reasons a vehicle is stopped and prohibited at the roadside - and one of the easiest to get wrong, because a load that looks fine at walking pace can shift dangerously under braking. DVSA can act on an insecure load on sight, so this is a daily-operation issue, not just an inspection one.
The rule of thumb
Load restraint has to hold the load against the forces of normal driving. The working figures DVSA uses are:
- Forward: the restraint must resist a force equal to the full weight of the load (the load tries to move forward under heavy braking).
- Sideways and rearward: the restraint must resist half the weight of the load (0.5g) in each direction.
Friction between the load and the bed helps, but it cannot be relied on alone - a wet or dusty bed, or a smooth load, offers far less grip than people assume.
Getting restraint right
- Use rated equipment. Straps, chains and their fittings carry a lashing capacity. The combined rating of the restraints must be enough for the load and the forces above - and the equipment itself must be in good order, not frayed or damaged.
- Use the headboard as the primary forward restraint where the load is against it, and do not exceed its rating.
- Combine methods - a mix of blocking, lashing and friction mats is often stronger and quicker than lashings alone.
- Do not over- or under-tension, and protect straps from sharp edges with corner protectors.
It is a system, not a knack
Good load security comes from the operator building it into the operation: the right equipment on the vehicle, drivers trained to use it, a check before moving off, and a re-check after the load settles or after the first part of the journey. A driver's daily walkaround should include the load and its restraint.
When it goes wrong
An insecure load can mean an immediate prohibition, a delayed journey, and - if it becomes a pattern - a mark against the operator's compliance. Worse, a shed load can injure or kill. The paperwork trail matters here too: evidence of driver training and of a check-before-departure routine is what shows the operator took it seriously.
