Wheel and tyre safety - preventing wheel loss
Wheel loss is rare but can kill, and it is almost always preventable. Torque wheel fasteners to specification with a calibrated wrench, re-torque after a short distance in service, fit torque-indicator markers for the daily walkaround, and keep tyres within tread, condition and rating limits.
A wheel coming off a lorry is one of the few defects that can kill a member of the public outright, which is why it is a standing DVSA priority and why the Guide to Maintaining Roadworthiness treats wheel and tyre security so seriously. The good news is that wheel loss is almost entirely preventable with a simple, evidenced routine.
Why wheels come off
Most detachments trace back to fitting, not to the wheel itself: fasteners torqued incorrectly, wheels not re-torqued after being disturbed, corrosion or dirt between mating faces, damaged studs or nuts, or mismatched components. The failure builds over the first miles after a wheel is fitted - which is exactly why the re-torque step matters.
The wheel-security routine
- Torque to the manufacturer's specification with a calibrated torque wrench when a wheel is fitted - never by feel or by an impact gun alone.
- Re-torque after a short distance in service, following the vehicle or wheel manufacturer's guidance and your own written policy. This is the step most often skipped and most often implicated in wheel loss.
- Fit torque-indicator markers so a loosening nut shows at a glance - and so the driver can check them on the daily walkaround.
- Keep mating faces clean and inspect studs, nuts and wheels for corrosion, cracks and damage.
- Record wheel removal and refitting, so there is a trail if a wheel is ever questioned.
Tyres
Tyres are checked at every safety inspection and on the daily walkaround. Watch:
- Tread depth - at least 1mm across the central three-quarters of the breadth for HGVs, all the way round.
- Condition - no cuts, bulges, exposed cords or debris trapped between twins.
- Correct rating and matching - load and speed ratings suited to the axle, and no mixing of incompatible types.
- Inflation and age - correct pressures, and awareness of older tyres, particularly on trailers and steer axles.
The driver's part
The daily walkaround is where a loosening wheel or a failing tyre gets caught between inspections. Torque markers, a visual check of nuts and a proper look at each tyre take seconds and stop most roadside prohibitions for wheels and tyres before they happen.
